Snowflake Treatments

New shuttles for my collection, (from David Reed Smith)and love them. This is size 80 and they are working well, worth checking out and great price too!

I used a product called "Stiffy" by PLAID, or you could add water to white glue. Completely submerge flake.

Press firmly to blot with paper towel.

I hung this one to dry it came out well no pinning it down. When dry I pressed with iron.  I have used other methods for the flakes, this is just one. I am experimenting on yellowing over the years.

This is little flake is called Adan by Jon Ysoff.

I love to add fishing line to hang them so just there beauty shows.

This one is Photogenic so it go an extra picture.

And don't make too much fun of my crochet work it has been a very long time, I plan on making a long scarf with this pattern is called Chunky Joy Joy
You may want to click on the name to  see what it is supposed to look like :) I do plan on adding flowers to this to change the look :)

  1. Great snowflake! I have tatted quite a few of Jon's designs and love them. I've been too afraid to stiffen any of my pieces, due to the potential for yellowing, so I'm curious as to how your experiments will turn out. Though it may take many years to realize the results :)

  2. They are lovely and photogenic indeed! I used the white glue in 2012, november I think, on some snowflakes and they are still white.

  3. Over the years I've found that the white glue (PVA) is fine but sugar water solution does turn yellow. It'll be interesting to see the result of your tests. Keep up the good work.

  4. Yes I noticed the bottle of sugar water has yellowed that I stuffed way back from last year so I think that will not work. I tried hair spray and a new item for got the name it was clear to start with and it claimed it would not yellow. But I like that white glue and sugar can be cleaned or boiled out and wonder if that can be redone if it is yellow.

  5. Ok, I'll see how white glue is called around here. I know now that you don't mean arabic gum, because that is naturally yellow. Thank you for the tip!

  9. Very informative post ! I have been dithering on whether & how to stiffen some of my bookmarks. This post has given me the courage to go for it.
Oh, but they are colored. But I think the glue dries transparent ...I might try it with fabric glue (diluted), which is also white & hopefully will serve it's purpose.

Your crochet scarf is coming along nicely ! Would love to see flowers on it :-)

    1. Yes I know what you mean about the colored book marks. I use Frey Check for that and I pin them out and drip it over it and do two coats and press they cool down and are very nice like a card :)

  11. I'm also wondering whether to stiffen my snowflakes. I used white glue last year and it worked fine, so I guess I'll do that again. I'm thinking that the ones with metallic thread might be ok on their own. The crochet looks like tatted rings, doesn't it?

    1. I know what you mean about the glitz stuff and white glue! I wet a paper towel and rubbed the glue off of the bead parts and will be using another type of glue for shinny thread and beads too!

    2. I did think that I chose those rings cause of tatting, there is something wrong with me!
