One more use for those snowflakes mmmmmm!
If you like spice cake you will love this unique recipe. some times this is called vinegar cake. You can't taste the vinegar :) |
Although it works on any dark color cake :)
2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
2 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup of corn starch
2 teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon each of allspice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt
Mix all above ingredients with fork
Then add 2/3 cups of oil
2 tablespoons of vinegar
2 cups of water
blend well with whisk, or fork couple minuets.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees f. this will make enough for a 9 X 13 inch pan in pan, I used two 6 inch small cake pans and 6 cup cakes. line an oiled pan with parchment paper and bake for 30 mins. Cup cakes 10 mins, or till toothpick comes out clean.
Remember that the mixture is very watery and misleading that way. There are no eggs.
cool 10 mins turn out of pan, and let cool down totally then lay Tatting on cake and sprinkle light amount with sifted power sugar.
I vaguely remember hearing about vinegar cake but never saw a recipe. I may have to try it. But I really love the idea of the design on top made with tatting!! Lovely! :-)
ReplyDeleteI really like it, and some people add another tablespoon of cinnamon. A friend gave it to me 23 years ago and I make it every year, she had no title for it and we had both heard of it as vinegar cake too, maybe she thought the title would discourage people and I went and did the same thing :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds delicious! I think "vinegar cake" is more of a generic term, as I've seen vinegar in other cake recipes, including chocolate. I know the vinegar does something to give it a nice texture, but I'm not sure exactly how it works.

The cake sounds delicious I have never heard of vinegar cake, I must try this recipe , but I think your idea is so clever, I had to show vernon, he said that was clever, it's a beautiful snowflake and a great idea for decorating the cake.

ReplyDeleteDear Carollyn, do you remove the doily and wash it afterwards? What a genius idea!! The vinager reacts with the baking powder and creates CO2 gas bubbles, that make the dough rise. It is like an artificial yeast..very clever and nicely old fashioned.

I figured it came from Europe, because I was shown with Paper doily not tatted, and an old art called scherenschnitte has also been used too. And I just dipped my doily in boiling water to rinse it off parchment paper can be cleaned of to same way. I used little dodads on small
ReplyDeletecup cakes. I had not worried about the sugar bothering them because I dip a lot of snowflakes in that sugar water too, to stiffen them. I will use this with some chocolate cookies on Valentine day too (with heart shapes of coarse!)
What a great idea! Cooking AND Science lesson in the kitchen for my daughter. Now I just have to convince her to learn how to tat. : )

ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I have seen the patterns done using paper doilies and icing sugar but this is much more sophisticated!!! Never heard of the recipe though, must give it a try.

Curious what the pattern is and what size thread? The snowflake appears to be 6 inches in diameter? Really neat idea!
ReplyDeleteThat snowflake has been refurbished from an old one and I wrote it down I can send you a copy soon I noticed an error in it and had not had a chance to correct it! This one is made in size 20 thread and is 6 inches in diameter.
