Covering tatting shuttles

I was encouraged to cover shuttles with another Carolyn, at her blog here at shopping my stash and we were experimenting with different papers this is fancy cup cake paper!

She also suggested to not paint them first, and that was fun if you look closely the shuttle color shows though a bit but I don't mind with this color design.

I used to cut paper to fit the shuttle, before and she suggested to wait and file off paper later. I forgot to add that the tops were sanded to ruff up to adhere better!

side view, continue with good coat on top and edges after filing off paper

Can't wait to make the others !

  1. These are so pretty! I love that print you used on these two. Who'd have thunk to use cupcake liners??? Not me!

  2. Very good idea, but make sure they are really strong and don 't start peeling off sooner or later.

    1. the paper is thin enough the thicker the paper the more I find it peals up.

  3. Beauttiful and I certainly would not have thought of using paper cup cake holders either.

  5. So cute !! Wonder if my metallic-type cupcake paper would work ?! My favorite steel shuttle (Boye's ?) has my thumbprint from all these years of tatting. Must try it.
And Love the Lucky Clover Doily !!! On my to-make list for the next season ;-)

    1. Oh I never thought of that you will have to let me know if it works out I know a glue for metal called E6000 but as long as the label says for wood or metal I think it will be okay!

    2. If sandpapering is required then I don't think I have the stomach to mar my favorite shuttle :-(
Will think about it or try it on something else with a similar surface first.

  6. I've never thought of using cupcake liners... great idea! I have decorated shuttles with and without painting first. The main reason I use the paint is so that the paper/fabric stays adhered to the shuttle. However, I do like the way the shuttle color shows through when the shuttle is not painted. With SewMate shuttles I get a beautiful jewel tone. When I finish with my Christmas presents, I will be going on a shuttle decorating binge!

  8. I'm the Carolyn that Carollyn mentions. I mostly use origami paper and have been very pleased with how the shuttles are holding up. As for the possibility of the paper peeling, I suggest putting Mod Podge on the edges of the shuttle to increase the seal between the plastic and the paper.

  9. They're lovely! I tried with one, too, but it was a failure, the paper tore and the edges glued! I should try again!

    1. I found them at Michael's arts and crafts, hobby store. I was struggling with finding small enough print on napkins.
